Is it nice?
Is it necessary?
Vero, gentile, necessario. Sono i tre principi su cui, secondo i Sufi, dovrebbe essere incentrata la comunicazione fra le persone.
Carol Fisher Saller, autrice di un breve ma necessario manualetto dal titolo The Subversive Copy Editor, si è indubbiamente ispirata a questi principi per formulare le regole che un bravo redattore (e nel mucchio ci mettiamo anche i correttori di traduzioni) dovrebbe seguire.
Eccole:
Is it wrong? Maybe it’s just different.
Is it confusing? Confusion is a lesser form than wrong and calls for intervention.
Is it ugly? There is the occasional sentence in which a writer’s decision isn’t wrong of confusing, but, aesthetically speaking, you know it will lie badly on the printed page and thereby hinder the reader.

Saller, senior editor press la University of Chicago Press e responsabile per la sezione Q&A del Chicago Manual of Style Online, indica anche altri tre elementi che si dovrebbero riscontrare nel comportamento di un redattore: cautela (nei rapporti con gli autori e i clienti), trasparenza (= collaborazione con il cliente/l’autore/il traduttore), flessibilità (che cosa si può e non si può negoziare).
Non acquistate il libro se siete alla ricerca di istruzioni o regole specifiche per imparare a redigere un testo. In tal caso vi conviene memorizzare una buona grammatica e tenere sulla scrivania un manuale di stile e un dizionario. L’autrice offre invece una serie di preziosissimi consigli ben meditati per comportarsi da professionisti.
Per redattori. Caldamente consigliato anche ai traduttori. Da rileggere periodicamente.

The systematic looting of language can be recognized by the tendency of its users to forgo its nuanced, complex, mid-wifery properties for menace and subjugation. Oppressive language does more than represent violence; it is violence; does more than represent the limits of knowledge; it limits knowledge. Whether it is obscuring state language or the faux-language of mindless media; whether it is the proud but calcified language of the academy or the commodity driven language of science; whether it is the malign language of law-without-ethics, or language designed for the estrangement of minorities, hiding its racist plunder in its literary cheek – it must be rejected, altered and exposed. It is the language that drinks blood, laps vulnerabilities, tucks its fascist boots under crinolines of respectability and patriotism as it moves relentlessly toward the bottom line and the bottomed-out mind. Sexist language, racist language, theistic language – all are typical of the policing languages of mastery, and cannot, do not permit new knowledge or encourage the mutual exchange of ideas.
